I just bought the Pit Boss 820 right before Christmas. My first meal was cooking 12 hamburgers using the sear function. They turned out great but I do have to learn to control the temperature a little bit better. Then for Christmas dinner I smoked two ribeye roasts. They turned out great. I had everything from medium rare to well-done, with just the right amount of smoke flavor and a nice bark. Today I did a whole chicken. The skin was nice and crispy and the breast was moist with again a good mild smoke flavor. All in all my experience so far with the smoker has been very pleasing. I know there are still some things I need to learn as far as time and temperature and make some adjustments to the smoking which are all possible with this smoker. I have been using a combination pellet produced by Camp Chef and I’m very pleased with it.
In terms of changing pellets, this sort of depends on the brand and model you go with. In the newer Pit Boss models, they have a “cleanout chute” where you can unscrew the hopper and allow the pellets to come out. In the Traeger models they have a door and pellets come out that way instead. This is something that brands like Pit Boss and Traeger recognized as being a problem and obviously it is now being implemented. When making your purchasing decision, definitely do your research and ensure the model has an option on the hopper to remove the pellets.
Cooking Area – Search for one with a substantial cooking region. Keep in mind that pellet barbecues arrive in an extensive variety of sizes. In this manner, pick a unit that can meet your size necessities in light of its cooking territory. You don’t need to purchase an additional extensive unit in case you’re utilizing the grill for your home. Awesome!.. clean, keeps temps, smokes like a boss (: 1st cookout was a 12lb pork butt, 24 brats, 12 hamburgers and 8 chicken thighs. Smoked the butt for 4 hours and wrapped. Kept it in for 6 hours at 250. It was a party favorite. I've never had a grill I could leave unattended for any length of time besides my electric smoker, and the flavor from the pitboss most definitely proves to be Superior. This was a gift from my wife for my 65th B-day. I have been smoking foods most of my adult life and still have one wood, one propane and one charcoal smoker but this is my first pellet. It's so easy it's boring. I just load it, shut the lid and and walk away. No puffing, no loading of wood or water, no worry's with temperature, easy to clean and makes me look like the pit boss. From the searing of steaks, to smoked red and white meats, to baking entire meals, this is the best. My friends have the others, but I have the best.

Portable grills are very popular these days. That’s why when we say that this grill has a rating of 4.2*, it means a lot. In fact, it means that this Pit Boss grill has a higher rating than all other portable grills currently on the market. Remember, these ratings are based on a culmination of reviews from a variety of different websites, 4.2* is very high!
So if I am going to take a pass on the Pit Boss then why not get a Traeger?  A lot of folks are introduced to this brand through the infomercials for the Traeger Renegade Elite.  And while the Elite and other models like the Tailgater are fine cookers I am not going to recommend a Traeger for the exact same reason that you are thinking about a Pit Boss.

Packaging was good inside and out. All parts were secured to prevent damage and we liked the colorful graphics on the hopper and under the hood that explained how a pellet smoker works for a first time user. When the 820 was almost fully assembled, we noticed an unused bag of washers that were not mentioned in the assembly instructions except in the parts list. After being on hold with customer service for ten minutes, we were advised to unscrew everything and refasten all parts adding the washers to the screw and lock nut assemblies.
But, who cares about all that!? How does it cook? I knew pellet grills could deliver the flavor based on my buddies’ samples. And they told me how easy it was, but I really didn’t believe it until I threw 4 split breasts and a rack of ribs on my Pit Boss for her maiden voyage. I LITERALLY did nothing, but my usual rubs and putting them on. After 2 hours on the chicken and 3 on the rib rack (Baby Back) at around 300 (then foil wrapped the rib for another half hour), I had PURE perfection. Every breast was evenly cooked according to size- and I never touched them (on my gas grill I have to constantly shuffle everything around for even the dream of even cooking (and pray for no flare-ups). I never had to flip either and the temperature was 160 top to bottom on the breasts when I pulled them. I have been cooking split breasts for 30 years…these were the best I have ever done- and all I had to do was drink beer. The ribs were smokey and had a REAL smoke ring. They didn’t “fall off the bone”, but just pulled away perfectly. SO good… honestly, this feels like cheating!
