Strangely, whenever you switch cooking temp, the auger runs continuously for four minutes before trying to adjust to the new set temp. This isn't so bad if you're going from low to high, but problematic in the opposite direction. We were slow smoking ribs when interrupted just as they passed the bend test and were ready to be sauced. Forgetting the controllers odd four minute drill, we turned the temp down from 225° to the lowest "Smoke" setting to hold them briefly. Luckily we returned within a few minutes to rescue the ribs. The continuous pellet feed had goosed temps to 400°! A serious flaw that should be corrected.
PRO: Grill is well built and assembly is straight forward. CONS: Grill exceeds selected temp by at least 40 degrees before settling in at selected temp. (Settling is a strong word, it continues to move between 25 degrees over and under selected temp) One time I saw 75 degrees over selected temp. I called customer service about the 40 degrees over and was told that is "normal" After three uses, grill wouldn't hold selected temp, temp kept falling. Turned off and cleaned. That fixed it. Cleaning this thing is a pain. Poor design. Now I clean burner before every use. Major pain. When smoking, it will not hold temp well. Bottom line: This is not the set it, and forget it Grill/smoker I was hoping for. It may be going back to Walmart

I just bought the Pit Boss 820 right before Christmas. My first meal was cooking 12 hamburgers using the sear function. They turned out great but I do have to learn to control the temperature a little bit better. Then for Christmas dinner I smoked two ribeye roasts. They turned out great. I had everything from medium rare to well-done, with just the right amount of smoke flavor and a nice bark. Today I did a whole chicken. The skin was nice and crispy and the breast was moist with again a good mild smoke flavor. All in all my experience so far with the smoker has been very pleasing. I know there are still some things I need to learn as far as time and temperature and make some adjustments to the smoking which are all possible with this smoker. I have been using a combination pellet produced by Camp Chef and I’m very pleased with it.

This grill produces fall off the bone ribs. I've also cooked a brisket to perfection. My only issue is that I have to clean it after every use. If it isn't cleaned properly (I remove all of the grates and use a shop vac to suction all ashes and unburned pellets) the pellets will back up and when they finally push through, you will have a huge flare up that will potentially burn whatever you are cooking as well as take the paint off the grill itself. Also, I find it works better if you set the dial to OFF and then back to whatever temperature you want. Other than those few quirks, I love this grill. I did find a larger Pit Boss after I bought this one, but it was about $150 more.
Pit Boss by Dansons, makers of the popular Louisiana Grills, has moved quickly into the growing pellet smoker arena dominated by Traeger. Danson's strategy to create a likeness of Traeger at a much lower price apparently worked. Pit Boss offers four respectable smokers that look and act a lot like Traegers at well below Traeger prices. Although overall construction appears pretty good, we all know you don't get something for nothing and the warranties may be indicative: Pit Boss one year, Traeger three years. Given the price difference, however, it's not useful to make apples to apples comparisons. For those who want a pellet smoker, but don't have a budget for Traeger, Pit Boss is a good option. That said, don't pay MSRP. Discounts are to be had on the entire PB line.
5 stars for this pellet grill primarily because of the size and $497 price tag. Competitors are double this price+ for similar sized and featured pellet bbq's. Construction is solid and heavy duty(nearly 200lbs) and I havent had any problems with the BBQ maintaining a +/-15 degree temp range once I had the p-rate dialed to the type of pellets I am using(treager hickory). This badboy produces plenty of smoke down in the 180-250 temp range and burns nice and clean in the 350-500 range. I have been using a smaller Traeger unit and purchased this for the increased grill space for larger family get togethers. Seems to work just as well as my Traeger and maybe even a little better at higher temp ranges closer to 500 degrees(my traeger wont generally get any hotter than 400). Only drawback is the pellet consumption...it goes through more pellets per hour than my smaller grill but that is due to the size of the BBQ and no fault of the grill design.

The grill is built like a tank, performs amazing and comes with a TEN YEAR warranty. In my opinion, once you get into the $400-$500 range a 1 year warranty does not make the grade. I know plenty of folks that have the Pit Boss and they really like it. They like them so much that when they fall apart in a few years that I suspect they will buy another Pit Boss. Some folks are perfectly happy with disposable grills and smokers. I am not one of them.

To start, let’s talk equipment. You don’t need to spend a lot, but you do need something reliable. I love my Pit Boss Memphis Wood Pellet Grill. It’s an all-in-one gas grill, charcoal grill, and electric smoker. And it’s available exclusively at Walmart! Then Pit Boss grill is a really strong choice, to sum things up. If you have been smoking meats for years  and are looking for a unit that lands at the very peak of the high-end for home use, you’ll want to look at one of the premium units we’ve reviewed, but frankly for the vast majority of people, this one right here will be an absolute treat and more than enough.
