Jump into summer with the Pit Boss Deluxe Wood Pellet Grill. Pit Boss brings the fun back to grilling with this heavy-duty grill with temperature range capabilities from 170–500 degrees Fahrenheit. With two levels of cooking racks, you can grill more at the same time and keep your foods in direct or indirect heat. An auto-ignition will have you up and grilling within seconds, and when you're done grilling, you can rely on the auto shutoff to wrap things up.
Transportable, but not only that. This grill is light, well designed and affordable all while having a huge amount of space for cooking up outdoors. The independently controlled burners mean that you can regulate temperature to fit your exact requirements. One small downfall being a lack of temperature measurements on the dials but this is by no means takes away from all of its positives.
But, who cares about all that!? How does it cook? I knew pellet grills could deliver the flavor based on my buddies’ samples. And they told me how easy it was, but I really didn’t believe it until I threw 4 split breasts and a rack of ribs on my Pit Boss for her maiden voyage. I LITERALLY did nothing, but my usual rubs and putting them on. After 2 hours on the chicken and 3 on the rib rack (Baby Back) at around 300 (then foil wrapped the rib for another half hour), I had PURE perfection. Every breast was evenly cooked according to size- and I never touched them (on my gas grill I have to constantly shuffle everything around for even the dream of even cooking (and pray for no flare-ups). I never had to flip either and the temperature was 160 top to bottom on the breasts when I pulled them. I have been cooking split breasts for 30 years…these were the best I have ever done- and all I had to do was drink beer. The ribs were smokey and had a REAL smoke ring. They didn’t “fall off the bone”, but just pulled away perfectly. SO good… honestly, this feels like cheating!
They are unique in that they can function as a comprehensive smoking machine, as well as a convenient grill. They feature an offset chamber which you can load with your charcoal/wood, and a separate chamber for your food. This set-up means you can easily use them and top up your fuel without disturbing the smoke levels with the food. Even cooking is achieved by a small miracle called reverse flow technology. This really just means there’s a small perforated plate sliding between the food and smoke chamber at the perfect frequency to completely equalize the temperature.
After only two weeks the auger jammed and quit turning. I stored the grill under a cover and had it under the eaves of my house. When I contacted Pit Boss customer service they said, "Even with a cover and being under the eaves, the pellets will still pull moisture out of the air. When those pellets get wet they can swell, and prevent the auger from turning." They included two pdf documents on how to disassemble the grill to include disconnecting wiring and circuit boards. If every time it rains, I'm going to clean out the auger, no thank you. No where in the instruction booklet does it say anything about not storing pellets in the hopper or it will clog the auger and will you have to spend the next week disassembling your grill.

With four porcelain-coated racks, this smoker is both easy to clean, as well as having a great capacity for a large amount of food (the cooking area measures at 676sq!) You don’t have to worry about disturbing the smoking process when refueling, as the smoker has as separate wood-chip burner tray, meaning you can smoke for days without disrupting the process.
Strangely, whenever you switch cooking temp, the auger runs continuously for four minutes before trying to adjust to the new set temp. This isn't so bad if you're going from low to high, but problematic in the opposite direction. We were slow smoking ribs when interrupted just as they passed the bend test and were ready to be sauced. Forgetting the controllers odd four minute drill, we turned the temp down from 225° to the lowest "Smoke" setting to hold them briefly. Luckily we returned within a few minutes to rescue the ribs. The continuous pellet feed had goosed temps to 400°! A serious flaw that should be corrected.
Pit Boss has a vast array of grills, ranging from ceramic to gas to pellet grills. Not to mention the vertical smokers and smoking grills. We know you don’t have all the time – and the resources – in the world to research or try out every single one of them in order to decide what’s best for you. That’s why we decided to do the dirty work ourselves. We did our homework, researched users’ reviews and recommendations, and came up with the best Pit Boss grills according to type. You’re welcome.
You are correct, I do not KNOW if these grills will last. That is also the point that I am trying to make…we don’t know if they will last and I am not going to put down several hundred bucks on something that doesn’t have a solid track record. This is a new brand that only carries a one year warranty. Pit Boss is made by the exact same people who make grills that carry a three year warranty on the electronics and a five year warranty on everything else on their high end pellet grills. Danson KNOWS how to make a pellet grill that lasts and they decided that they would only back the Pit Boss for one year.
The Pit Boss Grills 340 Wood Pellet Grill is a great grill with dial-in digital control and led read-out. Pellets are 100% natural hardwood. This grill has got an automatic start and cool down. It’s heavy duty with 16 gauge steel construction. It’s easy to assemble. It’s a little expensive. However, other grills are more expensive and seeing that I would recommend this to anyone.
In terms of changing pellets, this sort of depends on the brand and model you go with. In the newer Pit Boss models, they have a “cleanout chute” where you can unscrew the hopper and allow the pellets to come out. In the Traeger models they have a door and pellets come out that way instead. This is something that brands like Pit Boss and Traeger recognized as being a problem and obviously it is now being implemented. When making your purchasing decision, definitely do your research and ensure the model has an option on the hopper to remove the pellets.
Bought the smoker about 6 months ago - haven't started the gas grill since! I still have a propane smoker at the campground - going to try and sell that because we love the pit boss that much. We've smoked ribs, pork loin, prime rib, steaks, pizza and one of my favorites was smoked cheese. By turning up the"p"setting we were able to keep the temp down to around 80-95 degrees. We've smoked food in 90 temps all the way to 20 below zero it's no joke. Absolutely love the pit boss!
The first 820 Deluxe Pit Boss sent was defective. It made a loud clanging sound and visibly shook with each clang. It quickly became obvious that something was wrong with the auger. Pit Boss took it back and sent another that worked fine. The exact reason for the clanging was never adequately explained. Recognizing the popularity of Pit Boss and lack of substantive complaints by owners, we give them the benefit of the doubt and are willing to accept this problem was an anomaly. We could not find any other account of a similar issue with Pit Boss, and indeed, the vast majority of buyers seem pleased.
We’ve looked at grills with larger hopper capacities, but this one has been reported to hold anywhere from 10-20 pounds, depending on who you ask, but you should be able to fit a twenty-pound bag in there. This isn’t really a major point of contention because it’s simple to add more pellets as needed, and you can have this thing smoking all day without having to add more.
The design is different as well. Let’s say that Pit Boss makes a bit different, original grills, which is definitely an advantage if you are looking for a great grill, which will also look great while using it. Of course, the overall quality is above the average, so these grills are going to last for a long period of time regardless of the fact how frequently you use them.
Ease of Use: At first, the unit appears somewhat mind boggling to use however when you get over it the first occasion when it turns out to be very simple. For one thing, there is a get-together video instructional exercise from the maker’s site for a less demanding get-together. Else, anybody that has used a BBQ before wouldn’t have any type of trouble with the unit.
After an hour on tech support, taking the thing apart, they acknowledged the auger motor was bad and they would send me one. This would be FANTASTIC if I had owned the grill for a year or so and the company was standing by their product... but to insist on sending me a part to a BRAND NEW GRILL and having me replace it...Unacceptable. When I asked for a new replacement hopper system (I get it ... things break... and I'm willing to meet them halfway) they said no... just the motor. I would have kept it had they allowed me to swap out the entire hopper system but I shouldn't have to do surgery on a brand new piece of equipment. Please don't buy this poorly made (China) piece of trash.
