If you’re one of the serious barbecue enthusiasts, you would not want to leave any stone unturned to get your hands on the best of the best pellet smoker the market has to offer, in that case, you need the REC TEC Wood Pellet Smoker. Pit Boss Wood Pellet Grills 700 Series offers the best value per square inch in the pellet grill industry. The 700SC is as versatile as it is practical, featuring an upgraded care with locking caster wheels and complete cabinet enclosure for storage. The exterior is coated in a high-temp powder-coat finish with blue steel coloring. With 700 square inches of porcelain-coated cast iron cooking surface, including a removable second tier rack, the 700 series is perfect for a group of four to six.
Deluxe models have a unique arched drip plate, (above), which is found on many Louisiana smokers. Attempting to create a hot sear zone, a small plate is used to slide over openings in the larger arched plate to open or close direct exposure to the flaming firepot. The idea of exposing foods to the fire pot is used by several brands of pellet smokers. Generally it doesn't work well because the firepot flame is just too small to do much searing. Pit Boss is no exception. We placed a flight of chicken wings over the open slider, flipping occasionally while taking care not to move them from their original positions. As expected, only the few wings directly over the flame were seared,(below). The slider design dictates the absence of a flame diffuser over the firepot and one is not included with Deluxe models.
While marinades and seasonings help meats and veggies taste delicious, wood smoking chips and pellets can add rich flavor to your dishes, too. Many are designed to add robust maple and hickory flavors to meats as well as hints of fruit, like apple and peach, that are perfect for poultry. You can even stock the hopper with a mix of your favorite flavors to create a signature dish that's sure to impress even the pickiest of eaters.
Then Pit Boss grill is a really strong choice, to sum things up. If you have been smoking meats for years and are looking for a unit that lands at the very peak of the high-end for home use, you’ll want to look at one of the premium units we’ve reviewed, but frankly for the vast majority of people, this one right here will be an absolute treat and more than enough.
Update 2/18/2018: I made another call to Pit Boss today to get more information about their Copperhead vertical smoker. The phone was answered on the second ring by a man in Oregon. He was incredibly helpful and even went out to the warehouse and measured the grates for me. It looks like if you can get past the automated system and reach a real person then these guys will take care of you.
***Update 2...Now over a year in. I have easily fired this beauty up at least 150 times...yes, 2-3 times a week. With the cover, the care, and occasional, deep clean (just deep cleaned it for the 4th time..about a 1-2 hour simple process) it honestly looks like it did the day I set it up and works just as well. My pizza is the talk of my son's youth group buddies (don't want to tell them its Wal-Mart take and bake) and I can now cook/smoke/grill literally anything on this pit. My biggest problem now, if you read below about not using my 4K Cal Flame gas grill anymore (STILL haven't since), is that my wife if busting my chops to tear out my original 'outdoor kitchen' to free up more space on the patio! I'll keep making excuses to avoid that, but truth be told, this pit rendered my Cal Flame useless. Not one complaint...don't hesitate to buy this pit (remembering the $400 target price).***
