I bought the Pit Boss 440 Deluxe & cooked a pork butt. Set it on Smoke (P4) all was well for 2 hours then temperature ran away to over 615 degrees. Ruined that piece of meat. Called customer service & they talked at me instead of listening to me. Tried another pork butt set on 225 degrees temp once again ran away after an hour. Wrote an email to customer service with a response that they were sorry I was having trouble. Tried again today with the same result so sent another email with pictures of settings & indicated temperatures. Guess I'll have to finish this pork butt in the oven & go buy a Treagar Pellet Grill. If Pit Boss corrects this I'll update this review!
Generally speaking cheap grills are not made with quality materials. While the outside may look good, often times you will find the guts of the grill are made with lower grade metals. This of course affects functionality and longevity. If the inside of the grill isn’t made using quality materials you will literally burn through it over a certain period time.
***Six month update.... LOVE this pit. Can't say how much it has changed the way I cook. I initially bought it for the occasional times I want to smoke big meats... brisket, pork butt, ribs, pork belly, etc., and it is AWESOME for that. Totally "set it and forget it." But, it has completely replaced my $4000 Cal Flame gas "outdoor kitchen" for EVERYTHING. Burgers, chicken breasts/thighs/wings/etc, pork chops, steaks, veggies, pineapple...OK you get the point. I literally have not turned on my Cal-Flame since I purchased it. Our new favorite thing is buying cheap frozen pizzas and lasagna and making them taste like they were fired in a brick oven- without heating up the kitchen in our hot Texas summer months. Below is my original review, modified in a few spots where I have gained some knowledge and added some ***notes.... and, yes, I did use this for the graduation party mentioned below, and yes... it was perfection. I have been asked to cater similar events.
