Pit Boss Wood Pellet Grills are fueled by all natural BBQ wood pellets. The digital control board ignites the grill and allows you to set the cooking temperature from 180° to 500°F. Fan forced convection cooking eliminates the need for a rotisserie and creates a versatile environment for grilling, roasting, smoking, braising, searing and baking. The 820 features a Flame Broiler as standard; this adds the option to grill directly over an open flame when direct heat is needed. The Pit Boss 820 features a large 820 sq. in. total cooking surface: 580 sq. in. main and 240 sq. in. removable upper rack. With complete structural strength and durability, the Pit Boss 820 is made to last.

In terms of changing pellets, this sort of depends on the brand and model you go with. In the newer Pit Boss models, they have a “cleanout chute” where you can unscrew the hopper and allow the pellets to come out. In the Traeger models they have a door and pellets come out that way instead. This is something that brands like Pit Boss and Traeger recognized as being a problem and obviously it is now being implemented. When making your purchasing decision, definitely do your research and ensure the model has an option on the hopper to remove the pellets.
Packaging was good inside and out. All parts were secured to prevent damage and we liked the colorful graphics on the hopper and under the hood that explained how a pellet smoker works for a first time user. When the 820 was almost fully assembled, we noticed an unused bag of washers that were not mentioned in the assembly instructions except in the parts list. After being on hold with customer service for ten minutes, we were advised to unscrew everything and refasten all parts adding the washers to the screw and lock nut assemblies.
With four porcelain-coated racks, this smoker is both easy to clean, as well as having a great capacity for a large amount of food (the cooking area measures at 676sq!) You don’t have to worry about disturbing the smoking process when refueling, as the smoker has as separate wood-chip burner tray, meaning you can smoke for days without disrupting the process.
This pellet grill is an exceptional cooking machine. Utilizing only wood chips for fuel, it boasts of an extensive temperature range, letting you grill anywhere between 150 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Safety is not a problem, though. It has a digital control panel, letting you set the temperature and leave the grill to cook whatever it is you want to cook, the way you want it cooked! You can grill perfectly smoked ribs, bake pizza, grill some steak or burgers, and it’s perfectly cooked every time.
Strangely, whenever you switch cooking temp, the auger runs continuously for four minutes before trying to adjust to the new set temp. This isn't so bad if you're going from low to high, but problematic in the opposite direction. We were slow smoking ribs when interrupted just as they passed the bend test and were ready to be sauced. Forgetting the controllers odd four minute drill, we turned the temp down from 225° to the lowest "Smoke" setting to hold them briefly. Luckily we returned within a few minutes to rescue the ribs. The continuous pellet feed had goosed temps to 400°! A serious flaw that should be corrected.
Operation of your Pit Boss Deluxe Wood Pellet Grill is easy. Simply load the pellet hopper with your favourite all-natural hardwood pellets and turn the dial to your desired pre-set temperature. Within minutes, the grill automatically lights the pellets, and adjusts itself to your desired cooking temperature between 180° to 500°F. The grill can maintain that temperature all day, granted there’s always pellets. It’s that easy. Experience real wood-fired flavor with Pit Boss.
Pellet grills are outdoor cookers in every sense of the word. In saying that, I mean that they can bake, smoke and grill all through the magic of wood pellets and an electronic control panel that deposits just the right amount of pellet to maintain the perfect cooking temperature. With the simple turn of a knob, you can conjure up the gorgeous complex flavor of wood smoked meat without having to deal with the hassle of manual smoking.
Pit Boss Grills is owned by Dansons, the same company that makes the popular Louisiana Pellet Smokers. They are headquartered in Alberta, Canada with US distribution in Minnesota. Along with Traeger, Louisiana was one of the early entrants to the pellet smoker market. They produce a wide variety of pellet smokers, accessories and are getting into the kamado business as well.
This pellet smoker grill met 14 out of our 32 criteria when we used our checklist. Although 14 isn’t an exceptionally high score, the features that it did meet were the ones that were tied the most to customer satisfaction, encouraging us to look into the grill a little further. When the Grills Forever team did, we weren’t left disappointed! The smoker grill has one of the largest cooking grid sizes available today! The body of the grill itself is of high quality and is completely insulated, making it very efficient. The wide temperature range reaches a considerable height. However, the grill is remarkably durable and well prepared so you can rest assured of your safety. The porcelain-coated grates are also very easy to clean and conduct heat very well; lying underneath are the high-quality burners which are controlled through an automated system, meaning you can kick back and relax.

It is the PERFECT size for us. Large enough to cook for a party (you could get a full-size brisket, a medium pork shoulder and a rack of ribs or two on this grill at the same time using both racks), but it doesn’t take up the whole backyard. It gets hot enough, so that you could grill some chicken breasts or leg quarters, and/or sausage links while your briskets and ribs are resting. I plan on using this to feed about 100 guests and my son’s graduation party, and I don’t think it will even be a stretch with some good timing and finishing some brisket and pork shoulder in an oven.
